黎元洪是中国近代历史上的重要人物，他的生平与中华民国的建立和发展有着密切的关系。1911年辛亥革命爆发后，革命党在南京建立临时政府，各省代表推举孙中山为临时大总统，黎元洪当选为副总统。1912年元月，民国正式建立后，不便再沿用前朝货币形制，因此开始铸造新的民国货币。武昌造币厂也开铸了黎元洪像开国纪念币，正面图案中央为黎元洪光头像，珠圈外上环镌中文隶书体"中华民国"4字，下环镌中文隶书体"开国纪念币"5字，珠圈外左右两侧有梅花图案；背面图案中央是竖镌"壹圆"2字，珠圈外上环镌英文"THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA"(中华民国)，下环镌英文"ONE DOLLAR"(壹元)。两侧偏下有五角星。Li Yuanhong is an important figure in modern Chinese history, and his life is closely related to the establishment and development of the Republic of China.
