此作尺幅接近六尺，构图殊为不易。画家以没骨笔法将交迭错落的莲叶布置其中，画面满而有序，浓淡不同之墨色表现的莲叶，呈现出前后远近各不相同的强烈空间感，仿佛随风摇曳，姿态万分。以钩金法写红莲，因耗费时间和颜料，在画家生涯中并不常见，然其呈现出的富丽堂皇之效果，亦非寻常画荷之作所能相比。此法亦可见其晚年泼彩荷花作品中。大千画荷作品并不罕见，但以钩金红莲、工笔鸳鸯作此巨幅，传世者仅见两作，一为梅云堂旧藏本，乃大千写赠好友H岭梅（1913-1993）、詹云白（1916-1995）夫妇（图1）；另一幅即本幅《佳藕图》，赠予慷慨资助大千敦煌之行的实业家李公伉俪。本幅具年款「癸未夏日」，即1943年夏，正是大千离开敦煌、返回成都之际。经过两年七月的敦煌艺术洗礼，大千画风为之一变，开辟出四十年代盛年时期最为工细精丽、灿烂辉煌的工笔花鸟风格（The size of this work is close to six feet, and the composition is not easy. The painter arranges the overlapping lotus leaves with boneless brushwork, and the picture is full and orderly, and the lotus leaves expressed in different shades of ink show a strong sense of space with different distances before and after, as if swaying with the wind, and the posture is very different. The use of hooked gold to depict red lotus is not common in a painter's career because of the time and pigment required, but the magnificence it presents is not comparable to ordinary paintings. This method can also be seen in his later works of splashing lotus flowers. Daqian's paintings of lotus are not uncommon, but there are only two works of this huge painting made by hooking the golden red lotus and gongbi mandarin ducks, one is the old collection of Mei Yuntang, which was written by Daqian to his friends Gao Lingmei (1913-1993) and Zhan Yunbai (1916-1995) and his wife (fig. 1); The other is this "Lotus Root", which was given to the industrialist Li Gong and his wife, who generously funded their trip to Dunhuang. This painting has the year "Summer", that is, in the summer of 1943, when Daqian left Dunhuang and returned to Chengdu.
