The Yuan Dynasty blue-and-white 'Guiguzi Character Story' jar is a rare treasure among Yuan Dynasty blue-and-white porcelain. The decoration is divided into four sections. The neck is adorned with a wave pattern, the shoulder with entwined peonies, the body features human stories as the main motif, and the lower section displays stylized lotus petals enclosing various treasures, commonly known as the 'Eight Treasures.' Its shape is dignified and robust, with full lines, a straight mouth and short neck, slightly thickened lip, sloping shoulders, and a round belly that gradually widens below the shoulder and then narrows toward the base, which flares slightly. The bottom has a wide ring foot that flares outward, and the inside of the foot is unglazed, revealing a reddish hue from the firing. The body is thick yet pure white and delicate. Although the jar was made in separate sections joined with clay slip, the exterior seams are smooth after polishing, while the interior seams remain clearly visible—typical characteristics of large Yuan blue-and-white vessels. The cobalt blue used is imported 'Sumali Blue,' which produces deep, rich, and vibrant colors with a gem-like luster. Its most notable feature is that the pigment penetrates the body and naturally forms rust spots and crystalline specks, providing a textured and diffused effect that gives the design a watercolor-like charm, something later blue-and-white porcelain rarely achieves. The thick porcelain body is refined and creamy white, with a high whiteness after firing. The glaze is lustrous like jade, with a slightly bluish shine, good transparency, and a thick consistency that complements the blue decoration. As the pinnacle of Chinese ceramics, Yuan blue-and-white porcelain has long been valued for its enduring worth. Especially, top-quality pieces in perfect condition continue to attract fierce competition at high-end auctions, with prices expected to steadily increase.
