This Song Dynasty Ge kiln flower mouth wash is a classic artifact of Ge kiln porcelain from the Southern Song Dynasty (around the mid to late 12th century), and can be regarded as a representative relic of the fusion of Song Dynasty's "opening aesthetics" and palace craftsmanship. The age of this vessel can be traced back to the Southern Song Dynasty. As one of the "Five Famous Kilns" of the Song Dynasty, the mainstream view in academia is that it was fired in the official kiln system of Lin'an (now Hangzhou) during the Southern Song Dynasty. It was a famous kiln variety created by the Southern Song court to replicate the glaze colors of the Northern Song Dynasty's Ru and Guan kilns. Although there is controversy over the kiln mouth attributes of "Longquan Ge Kiln" and "Hangzhou Ge Kiln", from the perspective of glaze color, opening characteristics, and vessel type regulations, it is more in line with the standards of the Ge glaze category of "Xiu Nei Si Guan Kiln" or "Jiao Tan Xia Guan Kiln" in the Southern Song Dynasty, and is one of the core categories of porcelain used in the Southern Song court. Body glaze and "gold wire and iron wire": The body is a deep gray body with the characteristic of "purple mouth and iron feet", and the glaze material is based on lime alkali glaze. After multiple glaze applications, a thick glaze layer is formed (the glaze thickness can reach 2 millimeters); Opening cracks is a signature technique of the Ge kiln. By manually controlling the cracks through the "coefficient of expansion of the glaze body", and filling the cracks with ink, tea juice, etc., a texture layer of "coarse iron wire, fine gold wire" is formed. The opening of this vessel is naturally staggered like "ice cracks", with uneven line thickness, which is a manifestation of the "controllable opening" technology of the Ge kiln in the Southern Song Dynasty. Assembly and temperature control: Adopting the "pad firing" process (visible pad firing marks on the bottom), it needs to be fired in a reducing atmosphere of around 1200 ℃. The milky texture of the glaze surface ("butter light") is the result of the reconstruction of the glaze molecules in the reducing flame. Southern Song craftsmen adjusted the glaze formula (increasing potassium and sodium content) to achieve the effect of thick glaze without flowing and uniform opening, with an extremely low yield of finished products. The process of opening and filling requires manual completion after the object has cooled down from the kiln. The depth of cracks and the intensity of colors are all controlled by experience. The opening and filling of this object are uniform without any signs of detachment, reflecting the refined standards of palace porcelain production. This vessel is made of a flower mouth washing shape with "five petal flower mouth, shallow belly, and round feet", with a diameter of about 15 centimeters. It is a typical type of vessel supplied by the Southern Song Dynasty literary house: the flower mouth naturally transitions from the vessel mouth to the vessel belly, and the petal shape contour is smooth and smooth, without any hard splicing feeling, which is in line with the aesthetic orientation of "elegance" in the Song Dynasty; The proportion of shallow abdomen and round feet is suitable for the functions of "ink grinding and water holding" in the study room, which is the unity of practicality and aesthetics. The shape of the flower mouth needs to be manually adjusted after casting, or refined after molding. The thickness uniformity between the petals is extremely difficult to control. The symmetry and regularity of each petal of this vessel reflect the shaping accuracy of Southern Song porcelain. This vessel does not have any text or decoration, and is decorated with "plain surface opening" as the core - this is the embodiment of the aesthetic "no decoration is better than decoration" of the Song Dynasty. Ge kiln objects mostly use opening texture as the only decorative element, conveying the artistic conception of "natural and natural" through the warm and smooth glaze color and the rhythm of opening, which is highly compatible with the aesthetic of "plain and innocent" of Southern Song literati. It is a typical representative of the Song Dynasty's "carrying the message with the vessel".
