It first appeared in the Liangzhu Culture of the Neolithic Age and was used from the Shang and Zhou Dynasties through to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Its body is often decorated with exquisite patterns such as the God-Man and Animal-Face纹 (God-Man and Animal-Face motifs), showcasing superb craftsmanship and reflecting the highly advanced jade-making techniques of the time. The jade cong serves not only as a carrier of primitive religious beliefs and ritual systems but also embodies the ancient Chinese cosmology of "heaven is round and earth is square." It is an important material artifact for studying ancient social culture, religious beliefs, and craftsmanship, bearing profound historical and cultural connotations.
