The horses in the composition strike distinct poses—raising their heads, twisting sideways, diving forward, and walking slowly—with the four screens forming a cohesive whole where motion and stillness interweave harmoniously. Using varying shades of ink, the artist depicts flying manes and tails as well as well-proportioned muscles and bones; distant mountains are lightly washed in ink, paired with extensive blank space to create a vast, open artistic conception. Xu Beihong’s ink paintings of galloping horses are extremely rare in existence, and this piece, complete in spirit and full in vitality, is a treasured masterpiece in the history of modern Chinese painting.
