The subject matter is derived from the "mountain ghost" in Qu Yuan's "Nine Songs of the Chu Ci", and it is one of his classic figure paintings from the Jingangpo period (1940s). The background is swept with ink-wash painting, depicting wind, rain, clouds and mist, which echoes the artistic conception of "Thunder rumbling and rain pouring down in the dark".
