Harvest and The Elder of the Loess Plateau by Liu Wenxi — the crown model of rural realism of the Loess Plateau Painting School. Inheriting the Yan'an literary tradition of "brush and ink carrying people's livelihood", the Loess Plateau Painting School was founded by Liu Wenxi, and these two works are classic examples of his "rural realism" paradigm. Harvest adopts the "clustering three and gathering five" composition: the crops are clustered using the "dotting technique", the veins of stems and leaves adopt lines like "broken hairpins", showing the meticulousness of "brocade ground crops"; the group portraits are "dense and sparse connected", the main figure's robe patterns are "combination of meticulous and freehand brushwork", and the secondary figures' forms and spirits are "simple freehand brushwork", with ink and color complementing each other, consistent with the harvest scene. The Elder of the Loess Plateau establishes its skeleton with the "burnt ink texture rubbing technique": the figure's outline alternates between thick and thin lines, conforming to the norm of "bone method brushwork"; the robe patterns overlap with the "ink accumulation technique", with layered texture rendering, facial patterns "expressing spirit through form", wrinkles as fine as hair, and the pipe crafted with the "dotting technique", connecting with the figure's aura. The two works embody the essence of "quality integrating with literacy" of the Loess Plateau Painting School; the rough and smooth brush and ink contrast to show the demeanor of the people. Collecting them reveals the evolution of contemporary rural realism painting art, and they are indeed rare models for studying the cultural context of the Loess Plateau Painting School.
