A Group of Coins A masterpiece of currency administration in the Guangxu and Xuantong Periods, and a precious work of machine-cast silver dollars. During the Guangxu and Xuantong Periods of the late Qing Dynasty, the currency system underwent reform; the General Mint adopted Western machine casting methods to cast silver dollars as the universal currency. The Qing Dynasty silver coin and Guangxu Yuanbao silver coin were typical central and provincial mint coins at that time, inheriting the cultural context of currency system transformation. This group includes the Qing Dynasty silver coin of the 3rd year of the Xuantong Period and the Guangxu Yuanbao silver coin of the General Mint: the former has the face text "Qing Dynasty Silver Coin" in official calligraphy, with deep and sharp strokes like iron paintings and silver hooks, and the reverse is decorated with cloud dragon patterns, which are extraordinary, with distinct scales and claws, and machine casting file marks hidden in the texture; the latter is inscribed with "Guangxu Yuanbao" on the face, with the "General Mint" logo around, the "seated dragon" pattern on the reverse is majestic and dignified, and the edge teeth are evenly rolled without silver overflow defects. The patina of the two coins is mellow and moist like condensed silver grease, touching them is like touching ancient jade. As physical specimens of the transformation of late Qing Dynasty machine-cast coins from tradition to modernity, collecting them allows one to observe the regional evolution of currency administration in the Guangxu and Xuantong Periods, and appreciating them can see the integration of Western casting art and Chinese-style patterns. It is truly a precious model of modern currency culture, fully demonstrating the beauty of coin casting art and the importance of history during the transformation period.
